Prince George Drumming Circle

I joined this drumming circle 1 1/2 years past. I had not played an instrument for a good ten years and was looking for something new and exciting. It's quite different from playing reed and brass instruments - the djembe relies on hearing and feeling melodies, the music features lilts and unlimited textures and expression, etc. It sounds best in a group because the energy travels through each drum head; though you can play it on your own without having to count and wait for you part in the composition. It is definitely stretching my music awareness and skills. And it is relaxing. Like back country trips, drumming restores my inner rhythm and puts me at peace with the world.

If you'd like to try it out, here's the link:

Thank you for sharing this information Nicola! I still plan on dropping in on a session ... maybe in December when classes are finished.

Nicola, I heard about how you did drum playing in your class for practicum! What a wonderful idea! I still plan on thinking of creative ways to incorporate music into my lesson plans. This would be a great opportunity. I may not be able to participate in the classes in December, but I would love to try. :) Let me know the details ;)

The drum circle meets every Monday night at St Michael and All Angels Church (just off Victoria Street.) We play from 7-9 pm. It is a group of all ages that enjoys playing music. We are there to have fun, and if we learn some more along the way that is cool too. It is not a high pressure, high stakes group.

If you are new you should show up a bit before 7. If you're using Granville's drums you should also plan to help carry it back to his vehicle. Your first time out, you'll be playing (and watching at your discretion.)

It is $5 for students and $10 for the employed adults of our world.
