Many a year ago, when I had insomnia I would pass the time drawing. I would draw technical images like these so that the long night would pass quickly. Because these drawings required mimicry, I would be very nit picky about making an exact copy. If you just look at the images and compare them to the ones I did without copying you may not see the difference. BUT the process is night and day. This mimicry process was not enjoyable unless the product matched the sample in the drawing book. Now I focus on the PROCESS and it is quite relaxing, just like making music. This realization of the difference between product and PROCESS has opened new doors for me...

sample drawing from when I needed to copy

Note the different sources of images that we teach...observation is only one. Help students learn to make images from imagination, memory, and feeling, too and the process will feel different for them. But what a great idea to draw when you have insomnia. I might try that!
